INTERVIEW: Why You Should Feel Safe Taking Your Child to the Pediatric Emergency Room at St. Mary’s Medical Center

As I write this, Palm Beach County in Florida (where I live) has entered Phase 3 of reopening during the COVID-19 global pandemic. While all businesses are now open, essential businesses such as hospitals have remained open the entire time. However, understandably, many people might feel apprehensive about going anywhere – unless it truly is absolutely necessary.

One time when you have to make a hard decision is when your child possibly needs to go to the emergency room. Do you take your child, or wait and see what happens? What if his or her condition worsens because you didn’t take your child to the hospital? It’s a tough situation to be in, but I wanted to get some advice from an expert.

That’s why I’m thankful that Dr. Chad Sanborn with St. Mary’s Medical Center in West Palm Beach, Florida took the time to share with me some reassuring facts about how the hospital has been taking safety measures since the very beginning of the pandemic. He’s a Pediatric Infectious Disease Doctor, and a father himself. Not only did he set my mind at ease as a parent in case my child ever needed to go to the pediatric ER… but I myself can testify firsthand how comprehensive the safety measures are.

I went to the adult emergency room at St. Mary’s Medical Center a couple of months during a mini health scare, when I felt odd and disturbing sensations in my chest (which, looking back – don’t laugh, but I genuinely think I was having chest gas). I went to the ER as a precaution and had full tests run. Everything thankfully was A-OK with me, since the tests all came back normal… and I had the opportunity to see how safe and clean they are keeping things, plus how smoothly of an operation they are running at the hospital.
