“A fresh-faced beauty.” “…looked like she just rolled out of bed.” “So simple, so elegant!” “Why didn’t she try harder?”
All of these sentiments echoed across my personal Facebook feed, once I logged on after the royal wedding to see the general reaction.
Maybe it will surprise you that it surprised me how vehemently some women were dissing the makeup (or “un-made-up”) look chosen by the new Duchess of Sussex on her big day. Given that I’m a beauty blogger with a penchant for massive false magnetic lashes – and I wear them to work on a a regular basis – you would think I would have preferred a heavier makeup look for Meghan Markle, on a day when the eyes of the world would be fixated upon her with judgment.
Some said, in her defense, that Prince Harry preferred a more natural makeup look on her, which is why she went so light-handed with her look. Others claimed she should have stepped up her game, given that it was a royal wedding, and expectations were so high.
However, if there’s one tenet I’ve always held to, it’s that your makeup should ENHANCE your natural beauty, and not hide or mask it. I’ve never been one to do the crazy, over-the-top makeup looks on my YouTube channel, or try insane eyebrow trends, or do a sharp cut-crease look for everyday. The reason is because I’ve always thought you should notice me, and not my makeup, when you look at me.
What's up with the #MeghanMarkle wedding #makeup look? Thoughts on the #royalwedding from a biracial #beautyblogger. Share on XThat’s one of the problems I see on Instagram and social media these days. We’re all about “covering up our flaws,” but who says they are flaws, anyway?! As a bi-racial American the same age as Meghan Markle, it made my heart soar to see that she let her freckles stand out on her face. I’m totes freckly, too, Meghan! See, we could hang out – so much in common. 😉
My husband just said out loud, “She looked like she wasn’t wearing any makeup, which means she was doing it right.” Preach, honey!!
So my final stance is that Meghan Markle looked gorgeous, and her makeup was truly perfect for her. Sure, the Southern belle in me would have opted for a brighter lip color. But the rational part of me recognized that we were all looking at a stunning, natural beauty who felt secure enough in her appearance that she stood at the altar – next to her prince – with a “take me as I am” attitude. For that, I say, “YOU GO, GIRL!” #applause
